Virago Spirits is a small, family owned and operated distillery out of Richmond, Virginia

Their mission is to combine time-honored traditions with New World creativity to create unique, high-quality spirits.

Virago’s spirits are distilled on a vintage, direct-fire, 2,500-liter Charentais-style alembic still – one of only a few operating in the United States. The process is rare and laborious, but the results speak for themselves. The direct-fire adds layers of depth and complexity of flavor – much as with grilled food.

Distilling is done “low and slow” – where a single distillation can take upward of 12 hours and a complete distillation cycle (three ‘broullis’ distillations + one ‘bon chauffe’ distillation) requires upwards of 48 hours – this maximizes Virago’s ability to separate out the crude portions of the distillate and to concentrate flavor.

And finally, the glycol-chilled water cooling allows for precise control over the temperature of the final distillate, providing for a smoother, more aromatic product.

From Virago’s Experimental Series is the Modern Gin with Oolong Tea. It is carefully distilled from a unique blend of botanicals including juniper, coriander, Szechuan peppercorn, lemongrass, and Oolong tea.

Tasting Notes:

Lively, layered aromas of cracked peppercorn, fresh cut grass and cinnamon offer a beguiling introduction to this captivating gin. Presenting a counterpoint to more citrus-forward gins, the palate is suffused with piquant notes of Szechuan pepper balanced against the fragrant herbaceous notes of Oolong tea, lemon and grapefruit zest, and sweet anise before fading into a long, savory finish.
