From Prussian Siberia to the heart of Europe

Eifel began distilling in 2008 with the aims of preserving the old regional grain distilling tradition.

Germans have been distilling for much longer than in most parts of Scotland, and there are in fact 20,000 private distilleries in Germany!

Everything is done by hand by Stephan and his wife Carolin. Stephan mashes every Friday for Monday distillation and in turn mashes every Friday for distillation the following Monday. Carolin hand bottles and hand labels each bottle individually.

They distill initially in very old column stills with grist, following the traditional German method, and then again in a pot still. The spirit is distilled to 72-75% abv. Water is then added to lower it to 60% at which point it is sent back to the family property. The spirit is then aged in 50-500 liter barrels, depending on the final character of the spirit that Stephan is seeking out.

Stephan has worked as a wine importer and distributor for the past 35 years, and thus is able to get his hands on some of the finest barrels to age his spirits!

American, French, and Bulgarian oak casks are often used. When using Bordeaux casks, Stephan removes the tops and bottoms of the barrels, replaces these pieces with German oak, and then re-chars the barrels. This recharring has the effect of caramelizing the leftover red wines and creating exquisite flavors!

With the exception of the limited amount of product reserved for export to the US market, Eifel products are only available within the Eifel region, and are not even sold in other German areas like Berlin or Munich.

TASTING NOTES

A once in a lifetime limited release, Eifel Whisky’s German Peated Duo Malt Whisky was personally selected for the American market by Eifel Whisky’s owner, Stephan Mohr, and Anthem Imports’ owner, Fred Barnet. Only 2,400 bottles of this whisky were released, and when these bottles are gone, this product is gone forever.

This whisky is distilled and bottled in Germany’s Eifel region, a mountainous area with numerous active volcanos. Like all Anthem Imports producers, Eifel Whisky distills great spirits from great places, and offers consumers an opportunity to taste the terroir in these unique products. Distillation was done in the German tradition: a primary distillation in a column still (including the grist), followed by a second distillation in a small copper pot still. The alcohol content was reduced to 60% before entering casks. Eifel’s Peated Duo Malt Whisky is a blend of malted wheat, unpeated malted barley, and heavily peated (35ppm) malted barley.

The non-peated malts go into first fill Bordeaux casks, while the peated spirit is aged in re-charred red wine casks with new heavily-charred German Oak bottoms. The whisky is aged for a minimum of 7 years..

Distillation was done in the German tradition: a primary distillation in a column still (including the grist), followed by a second distillation in a small copper pot still. This whisky is a blend of two extremely high-quality whiskies from Eifel’s most prized stocks. One half of the whisky was aged for a minimum of 3 years in Bordeaux casks, followed by another 4+ years of aging in freshly emptied full size Laphroig 10 Year casks which themselves are ex-Maker’s Mark casks. The 2nd half of the whisky spends its first 4-5 years in freshly emptied full size Laphroig 10 Year casks which themselves are ex-Maker’s Mark casks, before spending its final two years in first fill red Bordeaux casks from Chateau Ausone—one of only four wines in Saint-Émilion hold the top classification of “Premier Grand Cru Classé (A).”
